You cant look back without paying homage to one of the best. When you talk about groups that influenced self expression and idealism you must mention Tribe. Q-Tip (Kamal Fareed), Phife Dawg (Malik Taylor), Ali Shaheed Muhammad and a fourth member, rapper Jarobi White made up Tribe Called Quest. The group assembled in 1988 in St. Albans, Queens. Tribe was always in rotation at Rich's house when we would make our mixtapes in the basement. Long live the Tribe.

Slum Village is yet another slept on powerhouse group. The group originally consisted of Baatin, T3, and J Dilla (R.I.P).  When Dilla left the group in 2002 to do his own thing, he was replaced by an untamed beast named Elzhi. Baatin later left the group as well due to personal issues. On top of being a group not afraid to harness their own style and sound, SV also introduced the world to artist like Dwele and Black Milk.

Ras has been around since like 94'. He is a proclaimed member of a certain collective of MC's who go by the name of The HRSMN. The HRSMN consist of Killah Priest, Canibus, Kurupt, and Ras. Ras's first album was the very informative "Soul On Ice". Ras pulled no punches when he expressed his views on the world and its history on this album. In my opinion he is one of the most well versed contenders in the game as of now.
